Coastal town hits all the right notes for a family-friendly trek

Nestled on the banks of Lake Michigan, just north of Grand Rapids, lies Muskegon, Michigan. Its small-town charm is studded with opportunities for recreational adventure, making it an excellent destination for a drivable, weekend-long get-away.
One new addition on the scene is the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park. “Look for the new, universally accessible rock-climbing wall to open later this year,” Caitlin Hegedus, marketing and operations manager with Visit Muskegon, says. “This new offering will allow everyone to experience the thrill of rock climbing—including those with disabilities.”
A new indoor Aquasis water park with a retractable roof, Duck Creek Resort, just opened this summer. “Popular features include the kids play structure, indoor pool, outdoor relaxation spa, five water slides and a ‘not-so-lazy’ adventure river,” Hegedus says.
The Early Owl is the newest dining destination in downtown Muskegon. “Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, this place has you covered,” Hegedus sats. “Enjoy the weather on the outdoor patio, and watch for the rooftop bar to open.”
Another new hotspot, located just steps from Trinity Health Arena, is Socibowl by Pigeon Hill. “They’ve set out to create the perfect space for a night out with friends—or a night where you meet your new best friends,” says Hegedus. The bar and restaurant features duckpin bowling, darts, pinball, oversized yard games and more.
Additional attractions near Muskegon include Michigan’s Adventure, a combined theme park and water park that offers more than 60 rides, slides and attractions, including seven roller coasters, and Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo, a 700-acre, fifth-generation family farm with a working fruit farm, corn maze and petting zoo.
